I kind of like diagramming sentences.
I know...that must sound really, really weird to most folks, who would rather amuse themselves by drinking beer and watching nascar races, swing cats around in a sack and dump them out and take bets on which way they fall, and other fun stuff like that, but, really, I just enjoy language, which is why,of course, I've been an English teacher, and am now a professional linguist.
With my 7th and 8th grade students, I invented fun (well, I thought so, and apparently some of them did, too) ways to learn better the parts of speech and the mechanics of our language.
For an example, I would give them a simple diagram, or, at least, series of parts of speech, and a letter, and have them come up with appropriate words for the parts of the speech to build sentences.
There would be something like this on the board when they walked into class, first thing:
Adjective Noun adverb verb preposition noun, conjunction adverb verb noun.
The letter P
(articles were "free").
They would have 5 minutes to come up with appropriate words for each part of speech, and then, I would take hands and go around and take words from the class to construct sentences on the board.
From the above, we would construct such lovely atrocities as:
Purple penguins politely pawned upon pickles, but proportionately primped the pancakes.
Sure, it makes no sense, but grammatically, it is a sound sentence.
We had fun with that.
We would discuss the various nouns there (pengiuns=subject, pickles=obj of preposition, pancakes=direct object), or other matters.
It worked. It was fun, got their attention, and they learned standard gramamtical structure.
But, apparently, Sarah Palin never did. She should have come to my class.

I purchased this drawing this afternoon walking by the
Yale Bookstore on my way home from the Publick Cup.
The artist, Isaac Canady, was selling his drawings on the sidewalk.
I should say I stole this...I paid only $30.00.
It is now framed and hanging on my wall.
He had many other great drawings.
I like this one...You may have already guessed why. |
